The importance of staying healthy as a pilot

 

We recently caught up with an AT 72-600 Captain for White Airways, about the importance of staying healthy as a pilot, the perks of the job, and her concerns for the future of the industry.

 

How long have you been a pilot? Tell us a little bit about your career so far.

I have been a pilot since 2006. I first flew the SD360, then the L1011, then the B767 and now the ATR. I have wanted to be a pilot since I was a kid. I thought pilot jobs were the coolest! 

 

What do you love about the job?

First of all, I love flying! And then there’s the challenge, the responsibility, the study involved, and working with different people.

 

What’s the hardest part about the job?

The time it takes us away from family and friends.

 

Your job involves sitting in a cockpit for long periods of time. How important is it for you to remain active in your free time What do you do to keep active?

It’s very important! I play lots of sports and I love going to the beach with my son.

 

What do you do to look after your mental health as a pilot?

I keep myself occupied with things that interest me.

 

How do you spend your time during layovers?

I go for walks and see what different places have to offer.

 

Do you have a favourite place for take offs and landings?

Lisbon.

 

What’s the most difficult thing you’ve had to deal with during a flight?

Unruly passengers!
