5 things to do if you’ve been fired from your job

Unfortunately, many people in their lives will get fired from their jobs. Whatever the reason may be, you’re likely feeling very frustrated and confused as to why. Being fired from your job is one of the most stressful events to go through, and it can happen to anyone.

So how do you deal with the fact that you have lost your job, while also motivating yourself to search for the next one? Read our advice below:

Don’t burn bridges

Your actions towards your employer post termination can affect your success further down the line. It’s easy to take your frustration out on others during this difficult time, especially to the person delivering the news to you. Compose yourself and act professional while it’s all still in process – otherwise it could affect future references. Be dignified with any responses at all times and don’t let emotions get in the way. Of course it’s difficult to hold your tongue if you feel you’ve been wronged, but ultimately you could end up in a worse position if you allow things to turn sour.

If you’ve been given an end date, you should continue to show up for work on time as usual, and maintain a high standard of professionalism. Fight the urge to do the bare minimum, bad mouth another employee, or use social media to vent your situation. It will reflect badly on you, and others will likely question your professionalism.

Find a new path

Being fired is difficult to accept, but although this might feel like the end of the road for you now, your job does not reflect who you are. Maybe it wasn’t the right place for you, or you didn’t gel with others there. It doesn’t mean every job is like this, and you won’t get hired somewhere else. Stay positive, and remember, we are all human and we make mistakes at times. Learn, and more importantly grow from this experience, and  time to reflect on these mistakes.

Expect to get asked why you were fired

The worst thing you could do is lie in your job interview – it could cost you the job itself. Potential employers will more than likely ask why you left your previous job, so be prepared to answer this question honestly – tell them the truth. Keep in mind that your potential employer will ask your most recent employer for a reference too. It’s better to be honest than to branded a liar further down the line.

Stay positive

When you start preparing for other interviews, try to maintain a positive outlook. Keep all of your successes you have had and everything you have accomplished front of mind. Being fired can 100% change the way you think, but it’s happened to more people than you think, who have all come back and found their way into another job.
